HDCP or High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection 2.2

HDCP 2.2 is a hardware level encryption developed by Intel in 2001 to help counter digital piracy.
For the layman, it is essentially a way for making each device with HDMI (High Definition Media Interface) know that the data it's receiving or sending adheres to certain parameters.

What are these Parameters?

With HDCP 2.2, the content protection is more or less directly targeted at 4K, UHD content. It, in effect, makes a digital handshake between two devices to ensure both are compatible.
Unfortunately a lot of 4K and UHD rated televisions and media panels are not actually rated for HDCP 2.2 and, despite having the hardware capable of displaying 4K content, lack the licensing and encryption hardware.

Due to the nature of how HDMI is implemented, this mean that anything in the signal chain that is not rated for HDCP 2.2 will break the chain, meaning you can't utilise the benefits of HDCP 2.2 unless all of your components in the signal chain meet the specification.

It does however mean you get some of the cool new benefits of HDMI 2.0 and it's peripherals. This includes UHD content as well as 4:4:4 sub-chroma sampling and HDR.
