A Tuner receives wireless broadcasts, typically AM and FM, although some tuners can also receive other bands such as MW and SW. This category also extends to the new FreeView Digital receivers for receiving Digital TV Broadcast.
The quality of the output from a tuner is dependant on several factors, mostly extraneous to the tuner itself: the geography of the area; the aerial and how it is positioned; distance from the transmitter; the proximity of buildings - these cause reflections and interference; nearby electrical disturbances such as cordless phones, microwave ovens, power lines (affects AM much more than FM); the selectivity of the tuner. Good tuners will have some form of multipath detection and compensation to deal with reflections from buildings, and some feature a blend or mono mode to give improved reception of weak FM signals.
