Audio line signals require two conductors. In an unbalanced line, the shield is one of those. In a balanced line, there are two internal wires plus the shield. One wire carries the audio information, while the other carries a phase inverted version of the same information.

At the input stage, the inverted audio signal is phase inverted again, then added to the other signal. Any noise picked up along the cable is then canceled out (see: phase cancellation). For the system to be balanced requires output transformers and usually employs either XLR connectors or 1/4" TRS connections.
